Why We Support Dallas Brodie: Conviction, Accountability and a Better B.C.

NewsForBC supports Dallas Brodie and OneBC. We see value in a political voice prepared to stand apart, make its case and ask British Columbians to consider a different direction. We are backing that opportunity with optimism and a belief that conviction belongs alongside accountability in public life.

OneBC’s official team page identifies Brodie as the MLA for Vancouver-Quilchena and the party’s interim leader, with a professional background as a former defence lawyer and television broadcaster. In our view, that combination brings useful skills to public life: asking questions, examining competing arguments and explaining choices clearly. Those are qualities worth encouraging in a political leader.

Conviction matters. We believe public life benefits when people are willing to put their views before voters rather than leave difficult questions unasked. But conviction is strongest when it welcomes scrutiny. A persuasive argument should be supported by evidence, tested through honest disagreement and improved when the facts require it. That is the standard we want Brodie and OneBC to meet, and the standard we will apply to everyone seeking public trust.

Our positive case is about possibility, not hostility. British Columbia should be a place where people can build a secure life, start a business, find a home and see a future for their children. Opportunity should be open to everyone. Political disagreement need not mean treating neighbours as enemies; a confident movement can defend its principles while recognizing the dignity of people who vote differently.

For us, the practical priorities are straightforward: affordability, dependable public services and clear accountability for public money. We want understandable proposals, honest explanations of costs and trade-offs, and measurable commitments that citizens can check. That is the public-interest standard behind our endorsement.

We also want a politics of listening. People deserve a fair hearing, including those who feel their concerns are brushed aside. Listening is not the same as promising everything to everyone. It means answering the substance of a question, acknowledging uncertainty and showing how a decision serves the wider public. Brodie and OneBC have an opportunity to make that approach central to the case they present.

There are practical ideas to build on. OneBC’s published priorities include reducing business red tape, shortening healthcare waits by reducing bureaucracy and increasing front-line capacity, and supporting advanced forest-fire detection and flood-resistant infrastructure. We welcome that focus on livelihoods, access to care and prepared communities. These are proposals; the next step is to set out credible funding and delivery plans. Bringing those everyday priorities into public debate is a positive starting point.
