Message from Chiefs and Council Regarding Recent Media and Correspondence Concerning Pipi7íyekw (Joffre Lakes Park)
To our Líl̓wat Nation members,
In recent weeks, Líl̓wat Nation leadership has become aware of letters, public commentary, and media coverage regarding concerns raised by some non-Líl̓wat individuals about public access to and use of Pipi7íyekw (Joffre Lakes Park). We want our membership to know that we see it. We hear it. And we understand the impact that this can have on our people.
Líl̓wat Nation will not entertain commentary, correspondence, or media narratives that are rooted in racism, prejudice, or a fundamental misunderstanding of who we are as a Nation and of our inherent rights. Too often, discussions about our lands, our responsibilities, and our role in decision-making are framed in ways that dismiss our existence as Lil̓wat7úl . Such perspectives are inaccurate and harmful.
Our people have lived on, cared for, and maintained relationships with these lands since time immemorial. We are the original and ongoing k̓wezúsmin̓ (caretakers) of Pipi7íyekw, and our stewardship responsibilities continue today, as they always have. We will not be distracted by narratives that seek to undermine our Nation, our people, or our responsibilities to the land.
At the same time, we recognize that the racism, ignorance, and hostility that often emerge in public conversations can be painful. These messages can weigh heavily on our hearts and spirits because they target not only policies or decisions, but our identities, our histories, and our place within our own territory.
We encourage all members to take care of themselves and one another during this time. Be mindful of what you choose to hold, engage with, and allow to take up space in your lives. Check in on one another and make space for rest, for healing, and for the teachings that remind us of who we are.
We remain proud of our Nation, our ancestors, and our collective responsibility to care for Pipi7íyekw for future generations. No amount of misunderstanding or misinformation can change who we are or diminish the rights and responsibilities that we carry as Lil̓wat7úl.
