# Dated update note — food-price and farmland-as-hard-asset context

Updated: 2026-08-18

## Why this was added

Chris asked NewsForBC to add the uploaded `food_crisis_watch_canada_bc.pdf` and Neil McCoy-Ward YouTube livestream to the existing farmland-billionaire story, asking whether a J.P. Morgan food-security/fertilizer-risk report could be another signal making farmland more attractive to wealthy buyers.

## Evidence labels used

- **Confirmed context:** J.P. Morgan published a public May 21, 2026 analysis saying Iran-conflict fertilizer disruptions and a brewing El Niño could pressure crop yields and food inflation. It does not mention B.C. farmland buyers.
- **Confirmed Canada context:** Canada’s Food Price Report 2026 forecasts 4%–6% overall food-price growth and up to $994.63 more for a family of four.
- **Confirmed live CPI context:** Statistics Canada’s July 2026 CPI release says food purchased from stores rose 3.1% year over year and grocery inflation outpaced headline CPI for the 18th consecutive month.
- **Confirmed farmland context:** FCC’s 2025 report says Canadian cultivated farmland values rose 9.3% on average, while B.C. averaged -1.7% in 2025.
- **U.S. billionaire farmland context:** The Land Report says Bill Gates/Cascade-linked holdings make him America’s largest private farmland owner, listing total acres at 275,000 and describing almost 250,000 acres of productive farm ground across 17 states.
- **Unproven leap:** NewsForBC did not find evidence that Stan Kroenke, Mark Walter, Bobby Patton Jr. or B.C. farmland companies bought land because of the J.P. Morgan analysis, because of a food-crisis forecast, or because “global elites know what is coming.” The article frames that as a reader theory / public-interest question, not a finding.
