[000.0-007.7] A 45-year-old man gets stabbed 42 times in 26 seconds in Surrey, BC with what the court [007.7-011.0] itself called a random act of extreme violence. [011.0-014.5] The victim, Delft and Paul-Bress-Bachmo. [014.5-017.9] No motive, no warning, no connection. [017.9-024.0] Just two-piece-of-shit teenagers leaving a party, spotting a random man, and killing [024.0-030.1] him in under half a minute outside semi-m-blah-blah-blah-blah-shopping centre. [030.1-033.1] What kind of fucking name is that? [033.1-039.2] Originally, they were convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced as adults. [039.2-043.5] Life in prison, parole eligibility after seven years. [043.5-047.4] But now that sentence is gone. [047.4-053.0] Because of a new Supreme Court of Canada ruling, the threshold for sentencing youth as adults [053.0-063.4] is now so high, it must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt that they deserve it. [063.4-064.5] So what happens? [064.5-070.2] Their life sentence gets replaced with the maximum under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. [070.2-080.3] Seven years total, only four behind bars, four years for a random 42-stab murder. [080.3-084.3] And because of that same law, their names are protected. [084.3-087.4] The victim's name is not. [087.4-091.3] Even the judge admitted the public would see this as an injustice. [091.3-094.7] I don't know, buddy, no fucking kidding. [094.7-097.3] This isn't a broken system anymore. [097.3-100.1] This is the system. [100.1-108.8] A system where brutality doesn't define the sentence, legal technicalities do, where diminished [108.8-116.0] responsibility outweighs undeniable violence where you can take a life in 26 seconds and [116.0-118.7] then be back on the street in four years. [118.7-124.6] So don't fucking ask why people are losing faith in the justice system. [124.6-131.2] Because when someone can commit a random 42-stab murder in 26 seconds and then be out in a few [131.2-136.9] years, that's not justice failing. [136.9-141.8] That's justice redefining what a human life is worth. [141.8-147.4] And if that's the new fucking standard, how much is your life worth?
