Not verified in public records reviewed: the viral claim that Morrison fled specifically because official systems ignored child-abuse allegations. That narrative appears in advocacy posts and social threads, but NewsForBC did not locate a public court order, transcript, file number, police abuse-investigation record, or child-protection record proving it.
What RCMP has said publicly
In its initial release, Beaverlodge RCMP said that on July 7, 2026, six-year-old Lanakai Morrison was taken by his 35-year-old mother, Krista Morrison, from Valhalla Centre near Beaverlodge, Alberta. RCMP said Lanakai was believed to be with Morrison, her partner Daniel Ludwig and another child, four-year-old Karl Morrison.
RCMP first listed a black 2015 Toyota Tundra, then said that vehicle had been located and that police believed the group was travelling in a red 2006 Ford F-350, Alberta plate CXW8820. The latest social posts and the RCMP wanted poster say the vehicle may be a lifted red 2006 Ford F-350 with oversized tires, or the group may be in a recreational vehicle.
On July 10, RCMP said Lanakai had been sighted the morning of July 8 in Fort St. John, British Columbia, and that B.C. police partners were involved. On July 17, RCMP social posts warned the public not to approach Krista Morrison or Daniel Ludwig and said the group may be in the Okanagan Valley near Vernon, travelling toward the Kootenays, or elsewhere in Northern B.C., Yukon or Alberta.
What mainstream reports add
Global News reported that Morrison and Ludwig are wanted for abduction in contravention of a custody/parenting order and that multiple B.C. sightings were being investigated. CTV Edmonton reported that the children from the earlier Amber Alert were still missing and that RCMP were searching in Alberta, B.C. and Yukon.
CBC reported that Alberta RCMP Cpl. Gina Slaney said the children were abducted by the adults after a court hearing found Lanakai should be with his father and Karl should be put into foster care. CBC quoted Slaney saying: “Once that decision was made, Krista and Daniel made the decision to take off with these children, so we’re looking at a parental abduction.”
Where the “protecting him from abuse” claim comes from
The protective-mother narrative appears to come mainly from advocacy and social-media posts, including a Women’s Coalition Substack/Facebook article that NewsForBC source-checked earlier this month. That article alleges abuse concerns, criticizes police and family court, and names Judge/Justice Jasmine Sihra/Sirha in a family-court chronology.
Those allegations may be important, but they are not the same as proof. Family-court and child-protection records are often sealed or private. Without a public order, transcript, file number, sworn material, police record or child-protection confirmation, readers should not treat social posts as established fact.
